Bio
Genevieve DeMarco was born in Patterson, Louisiana, and moved to Orlando, FL in 2011. She is a self-taught artist who discovered her gift of visual expressionism in 2012 and has not gone a day without the arts. Genevieve has exhibited in Atlanta, GA, Richmond, Virginia, Brooklyn, New York, New Orleans, LA, and all over Florida including the Mennello Museum of American Art, Stella Jones Gallery, and Orlando Museum of Art. Since February 2013 she has participated in multiple group exhibitions, festivals, and most recently a solo exhibit at Stella Jones Gallery in New Orleans, LA. In between exhibitions she’s been featured in various publications, worked on murals, and participated in live paintings. Genevieve currently resides in Orlando, FL.
Artist Statement
“My work is rooted in expressionism, history, music, and the Black experience. I use bold color, text, layered imagery, and expressive marks to tell stories that connect the past with the present.
Jazz is a major influence on my work, particularly artists like John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Nina Simone, and Louis Armstrong. I’m drawn to the freedom and emotion of the music, as well as the lives and history behind it.
I’m also inspired by Civil Rights-era photography and images that document Black life in America. That history connects to my work about the present, including racial injustice, police violence, and the experiences Black people continue to face today. At the same time, I make space for Black joy, culture, music, and everyday life.
Ultimately, I want my paintings to tell stories that feel honest and human while encouraging people to think about where we’ve been, where we are, and what connects us.”
