Description
That’s the Reason I Was Born is inspired by Louis Armstrong and his words, “That’s the reason I was born, to play jazz on this old horn.”
Music has always been deeply personal to me. My father was a music teacher and plays multiple instruments, so I grew up surrounded by music. I played the saxophone for 17 years, making jazz more than simply an influence on my work. It is part of my own history.
As a Louisiana native, I also feel a special connection to Louis Armstrong and the musical legacy of New Orleans. Through the expressive figure, handwritten words, flowers, layered marks, and bold color, I wanted to capture the freedom and improvisation of jazz while honoring the Black musicians who transformed their experiences into a sound that changed the world.
This painting is a celebration of Armstrong, but it is also a reflection of my own relationship with music, family, Louisiana, and the creative freedom that continues to shape me as an artist.
